I led Dantae out of his stall. He was a strong stallion, always up and sometimes a bully but I had adopted him anyways. I crosstied him and groomed his black coat until it shimmered. I slipped him a carrot before tacking up. Today was going to be my first ride on him! Once we were ready, we went out to the arena. I mounted and we warmed up. Dantae looked around a bit nervous. I kept a firm inside leg on him knowing he was bound to spook. A few laps later we moved into a trot. Dantae was forewards but not too quick and held his head a little too high. "It's okay boy" I said to him calmly. He was being wonderful and it wasn't long before we moved into a canter. He was pretty good except he tryed to gallop down the longsides. Half halt after half halt I managed to keep him under control. He eventually settled and we were able to move around nicely. Deciding to try some jumps, I slowed and hopped off. I set up a cross rail then a vertical about 2'3". I got back up on my black thoroughbred and we trotted around before attempting the line. I turned the big black horse towards the crossrail and prepared for it. 3...2...1...JUMP! Dantae overjumped the crossrail but we moved on with ease. I turned him in a circle before the vertical and approached the crossrail again. I could feel that his approach wasn't quite right and he had to squeeze a tiny stride before the jump but we cleared it. Dantae landed off too, he was really unbalanced. I raised my hands and applied leg to help him as the vertical quickly approached. 3...2...1...CRASH! Dantae tumbled over the jump and sent me through the air. I landed with a hard thump flat out on my back. Pain shot up my spine and thoughts flooded my mind. Not realizing what had really happened, I sat up only a little dizzy from the fall when I saw him. Dantae was clearly injured! He was lying down, his sides heaving, and blood covered his right front leg. Immidiatly I got up even though it hurt and rushed to him. There was a large gash about 5 inches long down the side of his cannon. "Easy now" I said to him trying to help him relax a little. "Your going to be alright" I said pulling out my cell to call for help. I punched in Fanfare's number and she picked right up. "Hey, it's Joaka" I said gasping "I was riding Dantae and we wiped out. I need help now, Dantae hurt his leg pretty bad" I said to her. In the background I could hear her rustling around for her shoes and coat before the door slammed shut and a cars engine ignited. 'I'll be right there' she said. I hung up trying to think of what to do. My first aid kit was up at the barn and Fanfare wouldn't get here for another few minutes. Oh yeah! Nuffy had put kits around the barn area in case of emergincies! I ran to the nearest one that was hanging by the gate. I grabbed it and ran back to the injured stallion. Popping open the lid, I found several items. First I pulled out some bute, a strong and efficent pain-killer. It was paste and I quickly gave it to Dantae. He didn't throw much of a fight, just laid there looking like he was going into shock. "It's okay buddy" I told him pulling out a sponge and a bottle of water. I wet the sponge and wiped up his leg. It was still bleeding but not as badly as before. It would need stitches once we got back to the barn. I pulled out some sterile gauze pads and anti-biotics. I placed the ani-biotics on the gauze and placed the padding over the injury. Next I rolled it with rolled gauze and finally wrapped in up in vet wrap. With Dantae's leg taken care of for now, I checked him over for any more injuries. There was nothing more, just a minor scratch where the snapped pole had caught him but it had already stopped bleeding. "Alright buddy, your going to have to get up" I told Dantae. He looked at me with scared looking eyes. Before I tryed to get him up, I took off the broken saddle. "C'mon boy! You can do it!" I said urging the large body to stand. It took a while but he eventually got to his feet, completely keeping weight off the injuered leg. I led him into the barn and into his stall where I tied him up. I rushed to get my vet supplies and came back a second later. Just as I began unwrapping the vet wrap, Fanfare came rushing in.
